I am afraid of coming to the dentist.. what can I do?

For some, visiting the dentist can be a little daunting.

If this relates to you, you are not alone. Many people share your concern, especially if it has been a while since your last visit. This is however, no reason to feel worried about making an appointment.

We are not here to lecture or to make you feel bad about your teeth, we want you to be happy and confident with your smile. If you are concerned, we would recommend booking an appointment just for a consultation so you can have a sit down with the dentist and together discuss any concerns you may have.

We like you to arrive relaxed and enjoy a nice coffee whilst you are waiting for your appointment. If you are feeling anxious, there a couple of things you can do to help settle the nerves before your appointment:

  • You can bring a family member or a friend for support and to make yourself more comfortable.
  • You might want to bring your own music to listen to whilst in the chair.
  • Write down any concerns you may have. This takes the stress off yourself trying to remember them.
  • Have something to eat before your appointment.
  • If it has been a long time since your last appointment and you are worried about what hidden treasures might be in your mouth, rest assured you are not the only one feeling this way. Don’t let yourself overthink the possibilities. It is really much simpler than you think, often, you may only need a clean.
  • If you do need a lot of work done, we can always work through it one thing at a time, at a pace that suits you and your budget.

If you, or a someone you know hasn’t seen a dentist for a while, a little encouragement is a great thing. Taking control and making an initial appointment is a positive first step towards a healthy smile. A smile is a wonderful thing and we want everyone to be proud of theirs.

Tell me about your sterilisation and why it's best practice.

We are committed to the highest standard of sterilisation, we package every item and track it’s sterilisation through its own unique barcode. This barcode is formulated by the autoclave and within it contains a log of its entire sterilisation journey including the temperature it reaches and of course whether it was successfully sterilised. Upon using the instrument, the barcode is scanned into the receiving patients file, this allows us to easily keep track of our instruments and ensure the safety of all our patients.

Do you have parking?

Yes, We have many customer carpark spaces located beneath our practice and indeed we also have plenty of off-street parking with no time restrictions.

What are some ways I can encourage my child to brush their teeth?

Getting our children to brush their time can sometimes be challenging. Below are a couple ideas that will hopefully be helpful:

  • Create a competition. Who can brush the longest.
  • Look at getting fun tooth accessories. Things like; flavoured tooth paste, dental floss and tooth brushes.
  • Race against the clock. Setup a timer and see if they can outlast it.
  • Reward the behaviour - Sticker charts are a good way to start.
  • Play a video-clip of their favourite song, so they have something to brush along to and distract.
  • Brushing with them.

Can I drive after anaesthetic and happy gas (Nitrous Oxide)?

Yes, you can drive after your appointment. Nitrous gas or happy gas wears off immediately after use. Whilst the local anaesthetic only has a localised effect.

Should I visit the dentist whilst I am pregnant?

At Hello Smiles, we encourage all pregnant to have a check-up. One common occurinng issue with pregnancy is gingivitis. This can be easily resolved with a simple clean.

Is it important to take an x-ray?

X-rays give us the ability to see between your teeth, under any previous work you’ve had done and also the bone surrounding your teeth. For us, X-Rays are important so we can thoroughly check for decay, gum disease and rule out bone abnormalities.
