What would you say is your dental philosophy?
My dental philosophy is to provide the highest level of preventative care to all of my patients and when required deliver restorative care that returns the natural function and aesthetics to the teeth and gums.
How does dental health relate to your body’s overall well-being?
The mouth is the gateway to the body and its overall health directly impacts the health and vitality of the rest of your body. Did you know that the mouth is home to over 500 different species of bacteria, fungi and virus? Sound gross doesn’t it, but in actuality when everything is in balance this microbiome is actually quite normal and healthy. When things become unbalanced such as during periods of dietary change, stress, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or lack of proper oral hygiene, the health of the entire body can be affected. This can lead to illness, fatigue, bad breath and even inefficiency of the body to process the foods we eat.
What is the one thing you would want patients to know about your work?
That I will always strive to a standard of excellence. I believe that, with anything, you should do it once and do it right!
How do you keep up-to-date with techniques, technology and teachings?
I regularly attend continuing education seminars and forums to gain the latest insights into technology, procedures and products in the dental field.
When did you decide to be a dentist?
I always loved the sciences at high school and decided that I wanted to do something in healthcare when I went to university. Dentistry offered a great balance between work and lifestyle, whilst also allowing me to help others.
What is the best part of your day?
When we finish a patients treatment and they are shocked that it was so easy and painless.
What is one thing that patients worry the most about that they shouldn’t?
That their treatment will be a painful or uncomfortable experience. With the advancements in anaesthetics and techniques, treatment can often be completed without any discomfort whatsoever.
What is the one thing patients don’t worry about and they need to pay attention to?
Acidic beverages in their diets. They are all too common in our modern diet and the damage they cause is insidious and irreversible.
Favourite movie of all time?
The Ghost and the Darkness starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas. A fictionalised account of two man eating lions in Tsavo, East Africa in the late 1900’s. I have an absolute fascination with Africa and have travelled to the continent on 20 separate occasions including living in a South African Game Reserve for six months when I was 19, so the movie real grabbed me.
What song cheers you up no matter what?
Dire Straights Walk of Life. One of the best bands ever and a song that is ever so catchy!
If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Thai chicken green curry and rice.
