Dr Vivian Cheung Dentist

B.DSc

Dr Vivian prides herself in building life long relationships with patients through open and honest conversations, and by having their best interest in mind. Her calm, kind and gentle approach means patients feel at-ease, whilst receiving the best dental care and attention possible.

As a 2011 University of Queensland Dental School graduate, Dr Viv has over 10 years of experience working as a dentist in Brisbane. During this time she also regularly visited rural regions in Queensland such as Emerald, Longreach, and Barcaldine to help meet the dental needs of these communities.

For patients who experience anxiety and especially children, Dr Viv's kind, warm and friendly approach means she is able to make her patients feel at ease whilst delivering beautiful long lasting dentistry.

She also possesses a special interest in aesthetic dentistry including cosmetic dental work such as resin build-ups, veneers, crowns and teeth-whitening.

Immigrating to Australia from Hong Kong at the age of 8, Dr Vivian is fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin.

Outside of the clinic, Viv loves spending time out with her husband and two daughters and all things food. Finding new restaurants, trying new food and being exposed to other cultures via their food and flavours is one of the things she enjoys the most.

Philosophy

“ My philosophy is to “do the right thing”, to provide patients with options and to always having a long term goal in mind. I work in a professional, efficient and conservative manner and as a busy mum of two, I appreciate how valuable time is, so I always try to be punctual”.

Dr Viv enjoys building rapport with her patients and for them to know that she always have their best interest in mind.

“ I would like my patients to feel at ease and confident in my dentistry. I also pride myself with open and honest communication with all my patients. I quite often use visual aids to explain things and try to avoid dental jargon”.

Most importantly, she wants her patients to feel confident in their smiles and be knowledgable in how to maintain their optimal dental health.

Education

Dr Viv graduated from All Hallows’ School and then attended the University of Queensland to study Bachelor of Dental Science. She spent time in Townsville during her final year placement and then proceeded to work in a private practice in Brisbane - where she also had the opportunity to work in Longreach, Barcaldine and Emerald. Dr Vivian enjoys all disciplines of dentistry, but has a particular interest in aesthetic dentistry.

Community and Association

She is an active member of CADMUS study club, attending monthly meetings and the annual clinic days. She was also the secretary for 2 years. CADMUS is one of the oldest study clubs in Brisbane, having members from different generations and from varying fields of dentistry. She enjoys attending meetings for the social aspect of catching up with other dental peers and specialists, and also to update and further her knowledge in multiple disciplines of dentistry.

What would you say is your dental philosophy?

To always strive for the highest standard of tailored care for my patients. I aim to empower my patients to become confident in optimising their dental health, and also in achieving and maintaining their ideal smile.

How does dental health relate to your body’s overall well-being?

Dental health has a huge impact on the body’s overall wellbeing, because put quite simply - you are what you eat. Without a healthy dentition, it can be challenging to eat a well-balanced diet. Without a healthy diet, your dentition can be negatively impacted. Furthermore, a smile can also play such a significant role emotionally and psychologically, which in turn further impacts on one’s overall well-being.

What is the one thing you would want patients to know about your work?

I always strive for the highest standard of care and the best outcome for my patients, whilst ensuring the experience is as stress-free as possible.

How do you keep up-to-date with techniques, technology and teachings?

I attend regular CADMUS study club meetings and professional development seminars. I also specifically seek out reputable courses and conferences to further my skills and to network with other colleagues and specialists.

When did you decide to be a dentist?

When I was 8 years old and I would convince my younger brother to sit in a reclined beach chair, so I could clean his teeth. As I got older, I was always interested in health science and wanted to work in a profession which offered a good work-life balance.

What is the best part of your day?

Getting to know my patients and to build lifelong relationships. It makes me really happy when I get to see my regular patients for a catch-up, whilst doing a bit of dentistry too.

What is one thing that patients worry the most about that they shouldn’t?

Some patients are really embarrassed about how anxious they feel about coming to the dentist, but there’s really no need to stress because we truly want you to have the most positive experience possible.

What is the one thing patients don’t worry about and they need to pay attention to?

A common misconception is that if it’s not painful or broken, don’t fix it. In fact, the most conservative approach is usually early detection requiring a more conservative, straightforward treatment; rather than waiting for things to get worse, resulting in pain and then requiring more invasive and extensive treatment. I always encourage my patients to be proactive in the maintenance of their teeth (eg. check up and clean every 6 months), to achieve long term, optimal dental health.
